Urban land area of Germany in 2015 amounted to 36 996 km², which is 1.26% more than in 2000, when it was 36 535 km². Since 1990, the area of urban land has increased in 1.07 times. The minimum area of urbanized land recorded in 1990, with a value of 34 563 km².
Areas are defined as urban where contiguous lighted cells from the nighttime lights or approximated urban extents based on buffered settlement points for which the total population is greater than 5,000 persons. This dataset is produced by the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) in collaboration with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), The World Bank, and Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT).
