Overview
Number of confirmed malaria cases in Gambia in 2023 amounted to 118 459, which is 0.542% less than in 2022, when it was 119 104 cases. This is the first year of decline after a period of growth. Since 2008, for the whole period of WHO statistics, the annual malaria case count in Gambia has increased in 3.02 times. The highest number of new malaria diagnoses was in 2012, when it reached 313 469. The minimum of Gambia was recorded in 2008, with a value of 39 164 cases.

About indicator
Confirmed cases used were reported through the laboratory, unless indicated by the country that confirmed cases should be used from the outpatient register owing to incomplete or inaccurate laboratory data. Confirmed cases were corrected for double counting of microscopy and RDT where the exact number of double counted cases was known. Confirmed cases include indigenous, imported, introduced, relapsing and recrudescent cases, as well as all species, including non-human malaria P. knowlesi.
