The Democracy Index in Italy in 2024 was 7.58 points. In 2023, the index value was  7.69. This is the first year of decline after a period of growth. Since 2006, over the entire period of Economist Intelligence data, this indicator has decreased in 1.02 times. The lower the index, the lower the level of democracy in a country. 10 represents the highest level of democracy. The lowest level of democracy in Italy was recorded in 2019, with a value of 7.52. The highest EIU’s Democracy Index was observed in 2017, when it reached 7.98. Democracy Index is based on five categories: electoral process and pluralism, functioning of government, political participation, political culture, and civil liberties.
