The total reserves of Japan in 2024 amounted to 1 230 667 million USD, which is 4.94% less than in 2023, when it was  1 294 636 million USD. This is the first year of decline after a period of growth. Over the entire data period of International Monetary Fund (IMF), since 1950, this indicator has increased in 2 034.12 times. The lowest reserves was recorded in 1950, when it was 605 million USD. The maximum value of Japan was in 2021, when total reserves including gold reached 1 405 749 million USD.

Total reserves comprise holdings of monetary gold, special drawing rights, reserves of IMF members held by the IMF, and holdings of foreign exchange under the control of monetary authorities. The gold component of these reserves is valued at year-end (December 31) London prices.
