The Democracy Index in Sri Lanka in 2024 was 6.19 points. In 2023, the index value was  6.17. This is the first year of growth after a decline. Since 2006, over the entire period of Economist Intelligence data, this indicator has decreased in 1.06 times. The lower the index, the lower the level of democracy in a country. 10 represents the highest level of democracy. The lowest level of democracy in Sri Lanka was recorded in 2014, with a value of 5.69. The highest EIU’s Democracy Index was observed in 2010, when it reached 6.64. Democracy Index is based on five categories: electoral process and pluralism, functioning of government, political participation, political culture, and civil liberties.
