The slum population of Sri Lanka in 2022 reached 1 802 926 people, which is 0.139% more than in 2021, when it was 1 800 418. This is the first year of growth after a decline. According to the UN-Habitat statistics, since 2000, the number of people living in slums has decreased in 1.10 times. The minimum of Sri Lanka was recorded in 2021, with a value of 1 800 418 people in slums. The maximum population living in slums was in 2020, when it reached 1 989 550 people. A household in a slum is defined as a group of people living under the same roof who lack one or more of the following conditions: access to clean water, adequate sanitation, sufficient living space, durable housing, and security of tenure.

Population living in slums is the proportion of the urban population living in slum households. A slum household is defined as a group of individuals living under the same roof lacking one or more of the following conditions: access to improved water, access to improved sanitation, sufficient living area, housing durability, and security of tenure, as adopted in the Millennium Development Goal Target 7.D. The successor, the Sustainable Development Goal 11.1.1, considers inadequate housing (housing affordability) to complement the above definition of slums/informal settlements.
