The slum population of Vanuatu in 2022 reached 2 419 people, which is 0.575% less than in 2021, when it was 2 433. It has been falling in this country for already 2 years in a row. According to the UN-Habitat statistics, since 2000, the number of people living in slums has increased in 1.33 times. The minimum of Vanuatu was recorded in 2000, with a value of 1 825 people in slums. The maximum population living in slums was in 2020, when it reached 3 114 people. A household in a slum is defined as a group of people living under the same roof who lack one or more of the following conditions: access to clean water, adequate sanitation, sufficient living space, durable housing, and security of tenure.

Population living in slums is the proportion of the urban population living in slum households. A slum household is defined as a group of individuals living under the same roof lacking one or more of the following conditions: access to improved water, access to improved sanitation, sufficient living area, housing durability, and security of tenure, as adopted in the Millennium Development Goal Target 7.D. The successor, the Sustainable Development Goal 11.1.1, considers inadequate housing (housing affordability) to complement the above definition of slums/informal settlements.
