Overview
The Global Innovation Index of South Africa in 2025 was 30.1 points. In 2024, the index value was 28.3. This is the first year of growth after a decline. 100 points indicate the maximum level of GII. Since 2013, over the entire period of data, this indicator has decreased in 1.25 times. The lowest level of innovation in South Africa was recorded in 2024, with a value of 28.3. The highest index was observed in 2014, when it reached 38.3. The Index is built on a rich dataset – the collection of 81 indicators from international public and private sources – going beyond the traditional measures of innovation since the definition of innovation has broadened.

About indicator
The overall GII score is the simple average of the Innovation Input and Output Sub-Index scores. The Innovation Input Sub-Index is comprised of five input pillars that capture elements of the economy that enable and facilitate innovative activities: (1) Institutions, (2) Human capital and research, (3) Infrastructure, (4) Market sophistication, and (5) Business sophistication.
