| Definition
"Ownership” refers to “Beneficial Ownership Location”: it indicates the economy in which the company that has the main commercial responsibility for the vessel is located. The economy of beneficial ownership may be different from the country in which the vessel is registered. The vessels covered in this table include all propelled sea-going merchant vessels of 1000 gross tons (GT) and above, including offshore drill ships and Floating Production, Storage and Offloading units (FPSOs). Military vessels, yachts, waterway vessels, fishing vessels, and offshore fixed and mobile platforms and barges are excluded. For ships that do not have DWT recorded in the raw data, UNCTAD estimates DWT based on the GT and type of the ship. For 2023, 1004 ship of a total of 56591 (1.8 per cent) lacked a DWT measure. These are primarily small ships representing 0.16 per cent of the estimated total DWT of the world fleet. This proportion is relatively bigger for some individual economies and ship types.
