| Definition
The data refer to the beginning of an indicated year. The figures cover seagoing propelled merchant ships of 100 gross tons and above, excluding inland waterway vessels, fishing vessels (from 2011 onwards only), military vessels, yachts, and offshore fixed and mobile platforms and barges (with the exception of FPSO - floating production, storage and offloading vessels - and drillships). For ships that do not have DWT recorded in the raw data, UNCTAD estimates DWT based on the GT and type of the ship. For 2024, 19453 ship of a total of 108789 (17.9 per cent) lacked a DWT measure. These are primarily small ships representing 0.33 per cent of the estimated total DWT of the world fleet. This proportion is relatively bigger for some individual economies and ship types.
