Overview
Passenger traffic of railways of Sri Lanka in 2015 amounted to 7 407.39 million passenger-km, which is 18.38% more than in 2013, when it was 6 257.38 million passenger-km. It has been growing in this country for already 3 years in a row. According to the International Union of Railways (UIC) statistics, since 1995, the volume of railways traffic has increased in 2.23 times. The lowest passenger traffic of railways was recorded in 1996, with a value of 3 103.00 million passenger-km. The maximum in Sri Lanka was in 2015, when it reached 7 407.39 million passenger-km. Passenger-km is a standard unit of measurement used in transport statistics to express the total passenger traffic. It combines both the number of passengers and the distance travelled into a single metric. The data from UIC is based on voluntary reporting by railway companies, and can show drastic increases or decreases for some of the years due to lack of reporting by some of the companies in that country.
